From the Trails Chairman . . .
Thanks to those who have participated in our winter 05/06 events. We have had some terrific hikes along different sections of the Altadena Crest Trail, including Sunset Ridge, Millard Canyon, Eaton Canyon, and points in between. We have elevated some neglected trailheads to community resources we can be proud of.

We invite you to venture out to these marvelous areas, such as the Millard Canyon access where it crosses Canyon Crest Rd, the Crib Trail which connects Lincoln Ave above Loma Alta to Sunset Ridge, Tanoble trailhead which is a nice midway access point between Rubio and Eaton Canyon, and the Las Flores Canyon Bridle Path.

Past Organized Hikes
Saturday, March 11th: Sunset Ridge Trail, Chaney Trail and Chaquita Canyon.
(March march #2) START: 9:15 am. Duration: less than 2 hours.
Met at the sidewalk in front of the Loma Alta Equestrian Arena (Go North on Lincoln Ave, 2 blocks past Altadena Dr, turn right onto Loma Alta, and go one block - there is plenty of parking). We left some cars there and car shuttled part way up Chaney Trail to park near the Andrea Wilson Triangle where the A.C.T. crosses Chaney Trail. This hike explored potential Altadena Crest Trail routes and examined trail conditions around Sunset Ridge Trail, Chaney Trail and Chaquita Canyon, hiked east to the area overlooking Chaquita Canyon to take a look at this gap in the Altadena Crest Trail, then back to Chaney Trail, and up the A.C.T. to point out the trail that continues on to Millard Canyon or Mt Lowe. Enjoyed rare views of the native California Snow-cover! Also, held a few tiny hail crystals on our gloves for a moment, just before the sun came out! Then we hiked the Sunset Ridge / SPS trail back down the hill to return to our cars on Loma Alta. This trail was definitely passable but very slick with muddy clay and a tight squeeze around a few temporary ponds, which I naturally just had to take an ankle bath in. (bah)

JANUARY 7th, Saturday morning, from 9:30 to 11:30 am. HIKED TO ECHO MOUNTAIN (rescheduled from an original date of 1/14). Met at 9:30 am, at the Stone Entry in front of Cobb Estate at the top of Lake (and Loma Alta Dr.) and returned to the same location at approximately 12:30 pm. Glorious day with great views.

DECEMBER 17, 2005 - 9:45 am Start. MET on Sunset Ridge ROAD, just outside La Vina's eastern gate. Hiked the Altadena Crest Trail section known as the Sunset Ridge Trail, from just north of the SPS, across Chaney Trail via A.C.T., and down to Millard Camp Picnic Area, then out to the south through the parking lot, and finally east across the Crib trail, back to Sunset Ridge Rd. Then, Rachel walked and documented a short hike through the SPS.

Past Volunteer Repair Efforts
Saturday, March 25th - Regular 4th Saturday A.C.T. TRAIL REPAIR - We started with a nice lunch and a history talk about Cobb Estate by Michele Zack, followed by 2 hours of trail restoration. Our intended target was the sloped access from Cobb Estate into the Las Flores creekbed, but we decided the boulders at the beginning should be handled by heavy equipment and began our clearing and shaping of the trail further down the hill. See Photos.

DECEMBER 2005 24th - Cleaned up trash, mowed weedy grasses, pruned brush and growth, cleared and widened trail, marked trail boundaries with rocks. Very nice, wide, flat trail between Lincoln and Sunset Ridge, North of Loma Alta Drive. Pretty this time of year with tall yellow sunflowers (possibly black-eyed Susans?) and the smell of sage.
NOVEMBER 2005 - FOCUS ON THE WEST SIDE
This month we will focus on the western-most sections of access to the Altadena Trails. Photos show a typical example of a trail that has been neglected. Notice creosoted telephone poles, large boulders, severe gullying and erosion.
Congrats to all on the success of our several events in October! On October 22, 2005, we celebrated Altadena Crest Trail Day with hikes, rides, refreshments, presentations, T-shirts and lots of great information. Over 100 neighbors attended. On October 8, in preparation for Trail Day, a group of Trail Maintenance Volunteers repaired a short section of the Altadena Crest Trail, led by CA State Parks Superintendent Frank Padilla. Resoration continued on 4 subsequent weekends, further east at the now fully restored, Tanoble Trailhead.
